About This Item

Cleveland/New York: World Publishing Company, 1961. Influential revisionist history and reinterpretation of the American idea of itself and its economic & foreign policy, from the British colonial era to the Cold War. Williams was a popular lecturer and leading exponent of the 'Wisconsin School' of historical interpretation, positing that economic motives were foremost in America's foreign policy and imperialism. Though associated with the New Left and anti-Vietnam War movements, Williams left the UW partly because of concerns about increasing student militancy. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured; stated first edition (first printing). Light wear to book, corners a little bumped & rubbed; jacket shows light rubbing, some chips, $7.50 price intact, light fading to spine; bookplate, initials & date inside front cover; light tanning to endsheets; minor pencil marginalia noted & erased, but some may remain. Text probably clean; 513 pages + note on the author; index. Laid in is a photocopy of a New York Times notice printing Williams' letter regarding their account of his views on the anti-war movement and campus protests.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. Octavo.
