About This Item
Harvard University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1917. Second Edition; First Printing. Cloth. 0486495507 . Previous owner name on ffep; some underlining in ink, else a very good copy. The first edition of this book, 1905, was an offprint of an article published in the Annals of Mathematics. According to the DSB, this book was for many years "the standard introduction to the theory of sets of points and transfinite numbers." [DSB] Huntington is well known for his work on axiomatics, both for his alternative set of axioms for Euclidean geometry and his method of proving the independence and completeness of axiom systems. He is also responsible for the mathematical method used to apportion seats in the U. S. House of Representatives since 1941. His method was recommended over those suggested by Thomas Jefferson. John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster and others by two different committees of mathematicians. The second committee was headed by John von Neumann, Marston Morse and Luther Eisenhart. ; 82 pages .
