A beautiful copy of this illustrated collection of Jean de la Fontaine's fables, limited edition works in the half crushed morocco signed binding by Bumpus. In a lovely condition. In the original French. Limited edition, with the first volume being numbered 66, the second volume being unnumbered. A two volume collection of Jean de la Fontaine's famous fables. Fontaine's fables were collection from a wide variety of sources, then adapted by himself into French free verse. They're humorous, ironical, and nuanced, and have become classics of French Literature. These volumes contain 'Le Cocu Battu et Content', 'La Calendrier des Vieillards', 'La Gascon Puni', 'Les Cordeliers de Catalogne', 'La Mandragore', 'L'Abbesse Malade', and many more. Jean de la Fontaine was best known for being a fabulist, and was one of the most popular and widely read French poets of his time, with his popularity still strong hundreds of years after his death. Illustrated throughout. Forest-Fleury is noted to the illustrated title pages. Forest-Fleury was a French etcher who worked in Lyons, who published his illustrations in a number of books.
