Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:

Illustrated with 24 color aquatint plates by Thomas Rowlandson. Octavo. [4],267,[1] pp. Bound in full morocco, gilt title and double-rule frames in spine compartments, gilt double-rule borders and inner dentelles, a.e.g. Leather has faded from a deep purple to brown on spine and top-edge of boards. This is Combe's own sequel to his very popular series of "Tours" of Doctor Syntax (published respectively in 1812, 1820 and 1821) which had inspired many parodies and imitations. Like the earlier titles in the series, it too is illustrated by Rowlandson. (CBEL II, 357; Tooley 413).

Mainz: Jos. Scholz, (ca. 1900 ). Oblong quarto bound in pictorial cloth-backed paper over boards. This is book number 2 in a series of illustrated books published by Scholz in Mainz, Germany. A bit of light wear, including the text block pulling away from the staples, else a very good copy. The books were identical in format with several artists contributing color illustrations. All of the books repeat a marvelous title page illustration, an ornamental border on the last page and endleaves, all overtly Art Nouveau in style. They are all lovely examples of period graphic design. This title is one of the most desirable in the series, due to the illustrations of Lefler and Urban, two of the leading artists of the Jugendstihl movement in Vienna.

Vienna: Martin Gerlach, 1899. Oblong portfolio, lettered boards and cloth spine, ties. The portfolio contains fifty-one photographic plates on thick card stock of the interiors of the Rathauskeller, decorated by Lefler and Urban, assisted by Karl Wilda, Alexander Goltz, Hugo Darnaut and others. Lacking the accompanying booklet. The booklet would contain the text and fifteen chromolithograph plates, and frankly the most visually exciting part of the work. The restaurants, wine cellar, bar, and halls were located beneath Vienna's City Hall, and was the most significant project awarded by the Viennese government to an architect at the turn of the century. Huge murals by Lefler in the style of his and Urban's medieval and historical book illustrations provided the overall decorative scheme which included the furniture and architectural elements. A wonderful documentation of this work of fin-de-siècle fin-de-siècle architecture and decoration by the "Twins", as they were known in Jugendstil circles… Read More
