About This Item
1849 Washington Grays Philadelphia Light Artillery CIVIL WAR Soldier PROVENANCE
"Without question [the Washington Grays] have been the parent and pattern of the militia of the City and State, as well as the foundation upon which was erected the magnificent National Guard of Pennsylvania if not of the entire country."
—John Oppell Foering
Scarcely printed, this copy of the 'Constitution and By-Laws…' of the historic Washington Grays of Philadelphia is incredibly rare! The Washing Grays Artillery Corp was an American volunteer regiment which functioned during both peace and war times. Formed in 1822, the iconic regiment would be continually relevant across the history of 19th-century America. Before becoming integrated into the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1879, the Corps would be utilized in numerous events and battles, including:
· Philadelphia Nativist Riots, 1844
· Mexican-American War, 1846
· Honor guard for the remains of former president John Quincy Adams, 1848
· The firing of salute at the raising of the first thirty-four-star US flag over Independence Hall alongside President Abraham Lincoln, 1861
· The merger of several Union military companies: 17th Pennsylvania Volunteers, 21st and 49th Pennsylvania Militia
