About This Item
London: Printed for James Waugh..., and A. Millar..., 1752. FIRST EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), 185 x 105 mms., pp. 51 [adverts]; disbound. Roger Flexman (17081795) should be of some interest to literary historians. Educated in John Moore's Presbyterian academy, he became a minister at the age of 20, but gradually began to lose his faith: J. Waddington, in Surrey Congregational History (1866), said of him, "Dr Flexman devoted his extensive learning to the work of undermining the faith of the Gospel.
He was greatly out of place as pastor of a Christian Church, and left only a nominal society at Jamaica Row [London] to prove the withering influence of error." Dr. Johnson remembered him as "the fellow who made the index to my Ramblers, and set down the name of Milton thus: Milton, Mr. John." Finally, he was the librarian of Dr. Williams's Library from 1786 to 1792.
