About This Item
Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1899. First Trade Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Small Octavo, [4], 229 pages. In Very Good condition. Bound in publisher's pictorial brown cloth with gilt titling to spine and front cover. Some mild shelf wear and rubbing, strip of discoloration along front board's fore edge. Webbing visible at rear gutter. Ink ownership inscription appears on the front free end paper, dated March 1900. JR Consignment. Shelved in Case 2. Chesnutt's first book, it contains seven short stories, all set in Patesville, North Carolina within the same framing narrative. The tales are all told by a formerly enslaved man named "Uncle Julius McAdoo", as he relates them to the narrator (a white northern man named John) and the narrator's wife. Chesnutt was an African-American author who frequently wrote about characters dealing with issues of mixed race, "passing", illegitimacy, racial identities, and social place. The Conjure Woman was adapted into a film by film-maker Oscar Micheaux in 1926, but is now believed to be lost. 1362133. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
