Lin Yutang (1895 -1976) was a Chinese writer, translator, linguist and inventor, who studied at Harvard and later at Leipzig University. Yutang taught English literature at Peking University and after 1935, he lived mainly in the United States. His informal but polished style in both Chinese and English made him one of the most influential writers of his generation, and his compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were bestsellers in the West. He authored a number of books, including this volume, one of the last of his which was first published in China.
