Lin Yutang (1895 -1976) was a Chinese writer, translator, linguist and inventor, who studied at Harvard and later at Leipzig University. Yutang taught English literature at Peking University and after 1935, he lived mainly in the United States. His informal but polished style in both Chinese and English made him one of the most influential writers of his generation, and his compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were bestsellers in the West. He authored a number of books, including this volume, one of the last of his which was first published in China. It includes a dramatic piece, "Confucius Saw Nancy ' and numerous essays on disparate and wide-ranging topics, including "On Crying at Movies", "On Sitting in Chairs", "On Shaking Hands", "O 'Being Naked" "On Mickey Mouse" and more extended essays on "The English Think in Chinese", "Feminist Thought in Ancient China", "Intellectual Currents in Modern China", :The Aesthetics of Chinese Calligraphy", Three Studies in Chinese Language", "Sex Imagery in the Chinese Language", and several satires.
