London : George Routledge and Sons , 1839. Leather. Good. 8.5" by 5.5". Phiz. A Routledge edition of this novel by Charles Lever, illustrated by Phiz. An early George Routledge edition of this work. Charles Lever was an Irish novelist, with this being his first novel which paints a humorous portrait of the Irish landscape in the nineteenth century. Illustrated by 'Phiz' or Halbot Knight Browne, an English artist and illustrated well known for his illustrations of Charles Dickens, Charles Lever and Harrison Ainsworth books. With twenty plates and a vignette title page and frontispiece by 'Phiz.'Collated, complete. In half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart with some rubbing to the extremities, spine and joints with some splitting to the head of the spine and loss to the title on the spine. Front free endpaper is torn from the tail. With a previous owner pencil inscription and bookseller sticker to the front pastedown. Previous owner inscription to the title page. Internally, firmly bound with generally bright pages with the odd scattered spot throughout. Good
