About This Item

New York, New York: Bay View Publishing Co.. Reprint . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. The celebrated author & essayist's best-known work, which some say "inaugurated the tradition of addiction literature in the West" as he illuminates both the pleasures & pains of the substance he began using to ease his trigeminal neuralgia. Reprinted from the First Edition (1821), published by Bay View Publishing of New York (n.d., c. 1880s), the autobiographical "Confessions" are enhanced here with an Introduction by the Editor, Appendix, & Notes on conversations between De Quincey & other writers & society members of the day. These additions, according to Garnett, are "for the most part, brilliant superfluities [that] convert the brief, pregnant narrative of one episode in a life into a diffuse autobiography." Small 24mo (4" x 6") hardcover has green cloth over boards lavishly decorated with darker green & gilt design & lettering to front & spine; lettering heavily faded on both. Condition is VG: very clean, binding strong with a slight rightward learn, hinges secure. Tissue guard to frontispiece intact. Pages creamy white & unmarked, with slight foxing to outside top & bottom edges. Former owner's bookplate to ffep.
