Octavo, [2cm/9inches], paperbound with pictorial covers, pp. 268, indexed. Fully Illustrated with 6 colour Art Deco plates by Robert Polack,The imprinted glassine cover is plesantly chipped Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. ... The novel, written in prose, is addressed to the writer George Sand, with whom Musset had an affair from 1833 to 1835. It is an autobiographical inspired novel in which Musset tells through his character his own experience. The novel is a fiction but it also incorporates a historical aspect since it depicts the state of mind of a generation ("a child of the century"). . The fall of Napoleon swept away the patriotic fever, and the youth, deprived of the ideal, fell into a bottomless despair. The restoration of the monarchy with the accession to the throne of Charles X marks the return to an old order, which most people are content to endure without being satisfied with it. The "evil of the century" is understood as a period of nihilism in which the old world is dying and the new world has not yet arrived. This unease that is that of a generation is embodied in the hero of the novel, which, idealist at first, suffers an existential doubt on the occasion of a disillusioned love. Having lost all hope, the hero indulges in a life of debauchery.
