Cover Art; True First Edition with no statement of printing on the copyright page and the price $3.95 on the dust jacket. The book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is clean and mostly bright, but has toning and foxing to the white portions of the front panel and spine. There is some beginning nicking / tiny chip to the bottom front flap joint and the top spine end. . This is the author's first novel. "In the summer of 1961, while camping in southern Idaho with his wife and daughter, Brautigan completed the novels A Confederate General From Big Sur and Trout Fishing in America. A Confederate General from Big Sur was his first published novel and met with little critical or commercial success. But when Trout Fishing in America was published in 1967, Brautigan was catapulted to international fame. Literary critics labeled him the writer most representative of the emerging countercultural youth-movement of the late 1960s, even though he was said to be contemptuous of hippies. Synopsis

A Confederate General From Big Sur is Richard Brautigan's first novel, published in 1964. The story takes place in 1957. A man named Lee Mellon believes he is a descendant of a Confederate general who was originally from Big Sur. This general is not in any books or records and there is so far no proof of his existence. Although Mellon meets a drifter from the Pacific Northwest who has also heard of this general.
