About This Item
New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1974. First American Edition. First Printing. "A traffic accident leaves Robert Maitland stranded and injured on a littered, undeveloped traffic island beneath three converging highways. He survives on radiator water and food litter and by manipulating the two other castaways he meets on his island, a disturbed young woman and a brain-damaged ex-acrobat. Another of Ballard's original, provocative parables of physical and psychological isolation in the modern world" (Barron, Horror Literature 4-15).
