About This Item

Great Britain: Osprey. Very Good/Good. 1974. 1st Osprey Edition. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 054007005X Hardback Hardback. A Concise Encyclopedia of the Theatre. Shelf wear to edge of D/J. This book is a comprehensive guide to world drama from the greeks to the present day. As the author explains in the Introduction, it concentrates mainly, but not exclusively on the straight theatre, and is divided into a number of sections carefully chosen to help playgoer and student alike. A Chronological History of the Theatre is followed by a Who's Who of Dramtists, again in chronological order; this is genuinely international and even the leading dramatists of small countries - theatrically speaking, are not neglected. In all nearly 400 playwrights are discussed. The third chapter is a review of very famous actors and actresses - although it should be stressed that many others are mentioned in the carious other sections of the book. The fourth chapter is in two sections: the first deals with the various types of theatre buildings from the Greek theatre onwards, and the physical business if staging playes; the second discusses some very famous individual theatres. The fifth chapter lists and discusses leading theatre comapnies and organisations, past and present. The sixth chapter is a backstage one, which lists leading directors, designers, producers, etc. The final chapter is a long A-Z of theatrical terms. The book is fully indexed. Illustrated. 212 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) .
