Undated Victorian family Bible bound in brown leather with brass plates to corners and two working brass clasps. All edges gilt. Hinges reinforced. Additional title page illustrated in colour.Tissue guarded colour plates to frontis and within. 8 page family register has been partially completed by a family named Adams, from 1852 to 1953. The Commentaries Condensed, and the Whole Edited by the Rev. John Eadie". Early edition. In thick brown leather, front and back decorated with blind stamped floral motif and surrounded by gilt border with smaller floral motif, within ruled lines; good, clean, straight covers but edge-worn, loose from spine with leather cracked; reinforced from endpapers with black tape. Spine tight, with horizontal ruled gilt lines and leaf motif design, good, but ends chipped; Endpapers tanned, marks on front endpapers. Cut edges gilt, fairly clean. Text block tanned, mostly around the edges, some foxing on early and late pages. With steel plate illustrations, coloured maps, plant drawings, biblical scenes etc., mainly by T.W. Ogilvy M'Niven; frontispiece of 'Pagan Rome' with tissue guard. Rare. Very heavy. Scarce.
