Chicago: G.W.Orear, Publisher, 1887. First Edition . Embossed Cloth. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A clean, solid Very Good opy with tight hinges. The spine is a little darkened and there is some chipping at the spine crown and some slight fraying at the spine foot. Original boards and spine are embossed red and gilt decorated dark blue cloth, owner's name in ink at top of decorated paste down. 254 pp., 151 wood-cut illustrations including 29 full-page wood-cuts and one tissue-protected photograph of E. W. Gillette's store and factory at 9, 11, 13 and 15 River Street. There is a list of all illustrations and a building index. "This book is published for the purpose of laying before its readers many of the most interesting features about Chicago, including her commercial importance and architectural improvement." A fabulous piece of Chicago history. Listed under 'Post-fire Chicago as a New Frontier" at the Chicago Library web-site.
