About This Item
Hong Kong: Hong Kong International Culture Co, 1007. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 296 pages. Illustrations (some in color). Appendix A, B, C, and D (Map). Inscribed by the author and his wife on fep. Dr. Tso joined USDA's tobacco research laboratory in Beltsville in 1952 as a research scientist and became laboratory director in the late 1960s. During his tenure, he developed a method of removing harmful proteins from the tobacco leaf. He was the author of many scholarly articles and books. After retiring from the Department of Agriculture in 1984, Dr. Tso worked as an independent consultant for USDA and tobacco companies until 2005. He founded the nonprofit Institute of International Development and Education in Agriculture and Life Sciences (IDEALS) in 1984 and was the executive director of the organization until 1997. Tien Chioh Tso was born in Hubei province, China. He graduated in 1941 from the University of Nanking, where he also received a master's degree in agricultural chemistry in 1944. He served in the Chinese military before moving to the United States. Many honors and awards came to T.C. during his career and perhaps most significant among them were the first CORESTA Prize in 1978, appointment as a Charter Member of the Senior Executive Service by USA President Carter in 1979, Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive in the Senior Executive Service in the United States by USA President Reagan in 1984, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tobacco Science Research Conference, the United States Superior Service Award and induction into the USDA Agriculture Research Service Hall of Fame. Tso emphasized that the three major concerns to face the world in the next 50 years are food, natural resources and the environment and concluded that agriculture held the key to resolve all of these. He believed that agriculture must proceed from the Green Revolution into the Gene Revolution. He deduced that agricultural education offered key means to link farmers' production to consumer demands.
