About This Item
San Francisco: The Grabhorn Press, 1958. Hardcover. Very good. Printed in an edition of 300 copies. Finely printed edition of Dante's epic poem The Divine Comedy (c.1310-14), a supreme meditation on vice, virtue, and humanity's relationship with the Divine that is widely regarded as the supreme achievement of classic Italian literature. The type is a special casting of Frederic Goudy's Kennerly Italic combined with a small Roman capital. The paper is mould-made, manufactured in England. The three volumes are bound in a strong hand-made parchment paper, gold-stamped on the spine and sides, and are enclosed in a cloth-covered box with a ribbon pull. Quarto, three volumes. Prospectus laid in. The bookplate of collector Donald Lee Williams appears on each front pastedown. The spines are a touch tanned; else a very good or better set.
