About This Item
London: Country Life. Very Good/Fair. 1964. First Edition. Hard Cloth Cover. Folio International shipping only by surface. Dust jacket tears with some loss, unclipped. Green buckram with bright gilt titling backed in red, slight damage to lower edge. No ownership marks. 214 pages including Appendix clean and tight. This Dictionary traces time-keeping from the earliest recorded mention of Shadow Clocks in Egypt c. 2,000 B.c. and the discovery that the Pharaohs had votive water clocks in their tombs, so that their Ka or Spirit might know when to make the daily offerings; through the discovery that Ball Clocks of the seventeenth century were not perpetual motion toys, but scientific attempts to establish a time standard based on Galileo's Law on the Inclined Plane; and passes on to Olsen's magnificent Copenhagen clock of 1956, thus providing a comprehensive picture of horological progress over the millenia. Geographically its scope is unparalleled, covering as it does the clocks of Austria, Bohemia, China, Denmark, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Malta and the United States of America. The illustrations are naturally an important feature of this definitive work. There are over 500 photographs and diagrams, nearly half of which, as far as the author's knowledge goes, have never before appeared in any book in England or elsewhere. .
