About This Item
Halifax: Michael Garlick Undated but estimated to be circa 1820. In the preface, which is dated 1779, Wesley states that "For many years I have been importuned to publish such a Hymn Book, as might be generally used in all our congregations throughout Great Britain and Ireland. Such a Hymn Book you have now before you. It is not so large as to be either cumbersome or expensive: and it is large enough to contain such a variety of Hymns, as will not soon be worn threadbare." 570pp with an engraved frontis portrait of John Wesley. Contemporary full calf boards recently rebacked. A Bartle family copy with a list of births to the front end paper. All the childrens names and dates check out against the parish register of St. Peter's Church, Birstall in Yorkshire. Birstall lies between Leeds and Halifax and south of Bradford. John Bartle, the father was in turn a worsted weaver, iron miner and coal miner. Two of the sons listed were also coal miners. Industry in Birstall in 1842 included manufacturing of blankets, woollen cloth and worsted, a prolific mine of coal and ironstone and quarries of building stone in all providing employment for 600 men.
