About This Item

Fifteen loose original albumen photos, each ca. 14x21,5 cm (5 ½ x 8 ½ in). Each photo is mounted on the original cabinet card ca. 15x30 cm (6 x 11 ¾ in). No captions. All edges of the card mounts are gilt. Card mounts are slightly rubber or scratched on extremities or verso; a couple of photos mildly faded, but overall a very good collection of rare cabinet card photos.

Attractive collection of early, well-preserved albumen photos of Gibraltar and Tangier.

The images of Gibraltar: General view from the Bay of Gibraltar; The Rock from the Road to Spain (with the border fence and guards in the lower right corner); The Rock from La Linea de la Concepcion; Naval ships at the New Mole in the Gibraltar Harbour; Gibraltar Harbour from the Upper Town; Grand Casemates Square and Moorish Castle; Gardiner’s Battery; Alameda Gardens (two views); Southport Gate in Charles V Wall; Military lookout of the Gibraltar Rock’s Summit; Catalan Bay and village.

The identified view of Tangier on the African side of the Strait of Gibraltar shows the Medina (old city) with the city walls and cannons in the foreground and the minaret of the Grand Mosque of Tangier in the right. Two other photos show a Bedouin camp with tents and camels; the second photo features a Moroccan city (possibly, Tangier) in the background.
