About This Item

London: Faber and Faber. 1976. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Original green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent, very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout. A touch of rubbing to spine tips and the merest bump to the upper corners. Complete with the dustwrapper (in its matte first state) with a very small abrasion (c. 4 x 2 mm) to the upper edge of the front panel and a touch of rubbing to spine tips and corners. Not price-clipped (£8.50 net to the front flap). An attractive copy. This was the first appearance of the collection which remains the standard edition of the poet's work to this day. Faber have reissued the volume in various guises over the years, but this original green and white design remains the most striking and attractive. The volume collects the poems that Auden wished to preserve, in their final revised form. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Synopsis

The collection is a compilation of all of Auden’s personal works that he wished to preserve. It includes three poems referred to by Auden as posthumous poems, and others that he omitted from the Collected Shorter Poems of 1966. Auden's work "ranges from the political to the religious, from the urbane to the pastoral, from the mandarin to the invigoratingly plain-spoken." His intention was to display his perceptions of life and concerns, and to challenge the traditional and modern to coexist.
