Illustrated edition of The Cloister and the Hearth by Charles Reade in the original publisher's cloth binding. Undated edition, dated through Jisc. With illustrations throughout the text and twenty colour plates by Gordon Browne. Collated, complete.This lovely historical fiction is Reade's best known work, set in the fifteenth century following the journey of a young scribe and illuminator on his travels through Europe.Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the half title page from 1917 and 1918 and prior owners book plate to the front pastedown. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, very smart. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities resulting in some slight wear to the cloth in these areas.
