Guatier de La Calprenede was a 17th-century French novelist. Calprenede, with his plays and novels, found favor with Queen Anne of Austria and her husband, King Louis XIII of France in 1650. While serving the royal family, Calprenede fell in love with one the Queen's maidens who agreed to marry him on the condition that he complete his lengthy novel 'Cleopatra'. He agreed, however, the novel took more than 10 years to complete and wasn't finished until 1657. Nevertheless, 'Cleopatra' became one of his most important and oft-read novels.

Mobilized in 1914, Sesmaisons served in artillery, was wounded, cited twice and was demobilized in 1921 with the rank of captain. At his request, he served again during the Second World War, despite medical advice of physical incapacity. He and his family were heavily involved in the French Resistance efforts over the course of war. Motto: DROIT MON CHEMIN
