About This Item
Bononiae: Apud Ioannem Rossium, 1594. Vellum. Good. 11.5" by 8". None. An incredibly scarce Latin work on the censure of the church of the Catholic religion, written by Bartholomeo Ugolini. A very scarce work. In Latin. This work is a duodecimo, the signatures running as a-b6, c8, A-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Ppp6, Qqq5. A look at Barbian arch priests and the censure of the church. The censure is the canon law of the Catholic Church, a medicinal and spiritual punishment imposed by the church on the delinquent, baptized, and contumacious person, when he is deprives of certain spiritual goods. This work looks at censorship, excommunication, suspension, and injunction. By Bartolomeo Ugolini, a academic and a trusted man of Lorenzo the Magnificent. He was a representative at the Aragonese of Naples, and was also the Bishop of Gaeta in 1494. With three bookplates to the front pastedown, 'Theol. Moral. L.S.N.L.', 'Ex Libris D. David Lewis; quos Patres Oratorii Londinensis Seminario dono dederunt, 1896', and 'Ex Bibliotheca Seminarii S. Ioannis'. Stamp to the recto to the front endpaper, 'Reference Library Book'. A vanishingly scarce Latin work on religion. In a full vellum binding. Externally, sound. The spine is lifting to the front joint, resulting in the front joint to be lifting too. Some loss to the head and tail of the spine, heavier to the head, with some loss to the rear joint. Discolouration to the boards and spine, as is usual with ellum. Some marking to the boards. Prior owner's ink inscription to the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Small wormholes to the front board. Vellum is lifting to the tail of the front board. Bookplates to the front pastedown. Stamp to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spotting. Tidemarks to the head and tail of the first few pages. Page 63 with some marking. Annotation to the margin of page 106. Closed tear to the head of pages 151, 157, and 487, resulting in no loss of text. Worming to the gutter of pages 251 to 268. Small tidemarks to the occasional page, including to the last few pages. Good
