About This Item

Ottawa: Marcel Broquet, 1988. 201 pp, 4to (12 1/2" H). B&w photographs, colour and b&w reproductions. "Already celebrated in Europe in 1906 as a great 'American' etcher, Clarence Gagnon then 25 years old, did not follow through his great success and wished thereafter to be recognized only as a painter. His work is represented in many different collections, public and private in Europe and Canada. The publication in France of 'Maria Chapdelaine' by Louis Hemon in 1933, wholly illustrated by Clarence Gagnon, is still talked about in many countries. The encounter of two geniuses as well as the perfect integration of the illustrations in the novel, made for the creation of a perfect book. The present study on Clarence Gagnon traces through a number of documents unrevealed up to now, an exceptional series of photos of and by Clarence Gagnon, and a unique career in the history of Canadian painting." A smll very shallow bump on the bottom edge of the front board, slight fading to the colour at the bottom edge of the boards, very light wear at the top/bottom of the spine and at the corners. Dust jacket has light rubbing, light fading to the spine colour and slightly less at the bottom edge of the front panel, some very light edge wrinkling, slight wear at the top of the spine with a tiny tear archivally taped, some light browing on the edges of the flaps.. Not Signed. First English Language Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good-. Illus. by Clarence Gagnon..
