About This Item
Salt Lake City: The University of Utah Press, 1935. First Edition. 23pp. Octavo [25 cm] Gray printed wrappers. Near fine. Cancelled check signed by Wallace Stegner laid in. Stegner's rare first printed is a condensed version of his thesis, on the noted geologist, Clarence E. Dutton (1841-1912). This copy was acquired directly from the Stegner family. Wallace Earle Stegner (1909-1993) was an American novelist, short story writer, environmentalist, and historian, often called 'The Dean of Western Writers'. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977, and through his writing program at Stanford University, influenced generations of writers (Edward Abbey, Ken Kesey, Wendell Berry, Larry McMurtry). Colberg A1.
"Considering the most obscure of the men who made up the first group of the United States Geological Survey, Wallace E. Stegner's little brochure, just brought out by the University of Utah Press, 'Clarence Edward Dutton: An Appraisal,' gives an illumination of his character that marks this member of the Survey, whatever the obscurity into which he has fallen, as an unusual and interesting personality." - SL Tribune (12/13/1936).
