About This Item

The Citadel of the Autarch (Volume Four of "The Book of the New Sun" which includes Shadow of the Torturer, Claw of the Conciliator, Sword of the Lictor) by Gene Wolfe Hardcover First Edition - First Printing New York: Timescape Simon & Schuster, 1983. Dust Jacket artwork by Don Maitz. $15.95 cover price. Reportedly about 10,000 trade hardcover copies produced. Near Fine in Near Fine- A fairly nice copy, not perfect, with some reading wear and tenderness to corners, and nicks and edge-wear to the jacket, and a slight crease to the back flap. Priced to sell. Special Note: I notice a lot of sellers are offering book club editions of The Book of the New Sun titles for prices nearly identical to trade first editions. My strongest recommendation is to avoid the book clubs except as cheap reading copies. NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers. ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT stock photos.) NOTE on edition: The Book of the New Sun series was published by Timescape (a subsidiary of Simon & Schuster US) and Sidgwick & Jackson UK from 1980 to 1983. In the US The Shadow of the Torturer (4000 copies), The Claw of the Conciliator and The Sword of the Lictor (6000 copies each), and ending with The Citadel of the Autarch (about 10,000 copies). No other trade hardcover editions of these books appeared in English. (There were separate book club editions and one bc omnibus from circa 2000.) From 2007 to 2012, Centipede Press did a 100-copy limited edition of each of the BOTNS titles in large format which are almost impossible to find and typically priced at $1000+ each when they come on the market. (I sold a copy of The Claw of the Conciliator for about $750 a few years ago and it sold instantly. I have a copy currently available for sale for $950)
