Glasgow, 1856. First edition. Hardcover. Fair. Small 8vo., 239pp illustrated with 24 plates. original blind-stamped cloth. No author stated on title page. Spine dull, frayed at top and bottom. Binding cracked at front and rear pastedown. Contemporary name written at preface page dated 1868. First Edition. Bottom corner of one page missing, with no loss to illustration. Ex reference library with few markings. Library number on front pastedown and reverse of title page, pictorial bookplate on rear pastedown. Single stamp on upper edge, inner book clean with no other obvious library markings. An ironic and facetious look at Glasgow and some of its notable citizens, much based on true events of the time (1852-1856). The council, judiciary, church, philanthropists are some of those targeted by this satirical humour. ’Some narrow minded persons may take offence at the freedom with which their public and official duties are discussed; but the wiser portion find only matter for a hearty laugh at the same time that they may see oddities and errors exposed which they may in future avoid.’ Plus ca change…
