The first edition of this scarce work.A novel in which the author explores the lives and struggles of the sick poor in France in the mid-nineteenth century.Most of this work was first published in 'Household Words'.By William Blanchard Jerrold, a journalist and author, who worked as the editor of 'Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper' for twenty-six years. Four pages of adverts to the rear, dated the 1st November 1860. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Front joint is cracked with some loss of cloth, and a small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Spine is a little faded. A few minor marks to the boards, a little heavier to the front board. Hinges are starting but firm. Labels to the paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots and handling marks. Good
