About This Item

London: Cassell & Company, 1960 8vo (25 cm), XV, 302 pp, 16 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj slightly frayed at top, blind collector's stamp on the front free endpaper, paper somewhat toned). Christopher Plantin (c.1520-1589) was one of the most successful printers and publishers of the sixteenth century. This biography, the first published in English, offers an account of his life and work, placing him in the context of the religious and political upheavals of the period. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including Plantin's own papers, the book provides a fascinating insight into the world of the Renaissance printer.
