[SAMUEL CLEMENS] FREDERICK W. PEABODY
Remarkable document! A copy of the Christian Science Church Manual, signed by its owner, Peabody, with handwritten notes by Mark Twain, who used it in preparing his famous 1907 polemic against Mary Baker Eddy and the church she founded.
Book signed: "Frederick W. Peabody/Notations by Mark Twain" on title page, 95 pages, 5¼x7¼, hardcover. Church Manual of the First Church of Christ Scientist by Mary Baker G. Eddy, The Christian Science Publishing Society, Boston, Massachusetts, 1899, 11th Edition. Label affixed to front cover: "Church Manual of the First Church of Christ/Mark Twain's Copy With Annotations". This book, which belonged to Peabody, has been annotated by Clemens, the noted author and lecturer who was known for his efforts to debunk frauds - especially those whom he deemed as religious charlatans. FREDERICK W. PEABODY has been described as a "detached or critical" biographer of Mary Baker Glover Eddy. SAMUEL L. CLEMENS, popularly known as "Mark Twain", directed his scorn toward both Mrs. Eddy and her religion in his 1907 book, Christian Science. The book attacked Eddy, whom he maintained could not have written Science and Health, the book that served as the basis for her beliefs, as well as the basic tenets of her new religion, which are presented in the book offered here. MARY BAKER EDDY (1821-1910) had published the book, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures, in 1875. In 1892, she reorganized her church in Boston, renaming it The First Church of Christ, Scientist, commonly known as The Mother Church. The Manual of the Mother Church, first published in 1895, had its final revision in 1908, the year Eddy founded "The Christian Science Monitor". She had established The Christian Science Publishing Society, the publisher of this book, in 1898, the year before this edition was published. Signature page lightly soiled, glue stains at blank left margin. Cover stained at upper edge, worn at upper and lower edges of spine. Overall, in fine condition.
