About This Item

Glasgow: For the Glasgow Emancipation Society, by David Russell, 1845. First Edition. 12mo (17cm). Sewn, printed wrappers; 17,(1)pp. Removed; bit of creasing at corners; Very Good.

Wright, the radical American abolitionist and Freethinker, attacks the reigning orthodoxy of American churches by pointing out the logical incompatibility between the tenets of true (versus orthodox) Christianity and the evils of slavery and war: "...professed christians and ministers...show much anxiety to cleanse the Christian Church from these sins...Their error is in supposing these crimes ever had a place in the Christian Church; and that those who commit them are members of it. Such can never be one in spirit with Christ and the Father. Nothing, into which slavery and war, or those who commit them, can enter, and be in good and regular standing, can be a Christian Church; and of course we need feel no anxiety to keep them out of it."

A provocative attack on both the hypocrisy of the Church and the fundamental contradictions of organized religion, by one of the most interesting American radical authors of the period. Scarce; half a dozen physical holdings noted in OCLC, of which five are in the U.S.
