Parts I and II in one volume: i-x (including Title Page and Contents), iii-xxi (including Preface, Advertisement and Second Preface), Chrestomathic Instruction Tables Table I, Chrestomathic Instruction Tables Table II, 1-98, Chrestomathic Instruction Tables Table II [sic], Table III, Table IV, Table V, 99-347, 1-24 (p. 4 mis-numbered as p. 2), Corrigenda (bound in with verso first). Half leather over marbled boards. Front board and first free end paper are detached, half of spine leather is deteriorated or missing, some gilt from the title and rules are visible. Text block is secure and remarkably clean; paste-downs and end papers foxed and stained, but only light foxing asnd toning throughout that do not affect legibility. All six folding tables are in very good condition, Table I having a closed 5" tear along one crease, not affecting legibility. Book plate of Governor DeWitt Clinton of New York on front paste-down. First edition of Part I with prepublication edition of Part II with four additional folding Tables included. Bentham's only work on education remarkable for its purpose to expand education to "middling ranks" and its emphasis on science in education and de-emphasis of Greek and Latin. Clinton is best known for being largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. However, he was also a leading supporter of public education in America.. First Edition. Half Leather.
