James Bright (1832-1920) was a British historian and Master of University College, Oxford. Fellow and Dean of. Richard Bright (1789-1858), his father, was a noted physician who was appointed Physician Extraordinary to the Queen upon the accession of Queen Victoria. The plates show gems illustrated with figures either from Greek mythology and Greek and Roman history (e.g., Augustus, Tiberius, Agrippina, Claudius, Hadrian, Antinous, Ptolemy Philadelphus) and the text provides detailed information about each plate.
