About This Item

Hampton, VA: The Press of The Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, 1911. Loose Photographs / Paperback. Photos : Very Good / Journal : Fine. Three original gelatin silver photos, measuring 7 x 7.5 ; 5.5 x 8 and 8.75 x 6.6 inches, all w. typed captions, photographer credit and company rubber stamps on versos. Photos show the Kamloops Missionary and "Indian Shorthand" creator, Father Le Jeune, kneeling with some of his congregation in front of their church in Kamloops, BC ; a nice panoramic shot of Kamloops as a frontier town with the Church visible in the distance and, a composite photo of a typical copy of the Wawa newspaper. Also included is a fine copy of The Southern Workman, which published the photos and article written by the traveling journalist, Lillian Zeh. The Southern Workman was published by the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Hampton, Virginia, who were "an undenominational industrial school founded in 1868 by Samuel Chapman Armstrong for Negro youth. [with] Indians admitted in 1878." their objective was "to train teachers and industrial leaders... having an enrollment of Negroes, 1317; Indians, 82; total, 1399" from verso front cover. Photos with some fading and edge wear, creasing, small chips and closed tears. An intriguing collection of early 20th century documentary photographs, captured by an itinerant woman journalist while working in the field.
