About This Item
Princessehof, Leeuwarden, 1990 Book. Good. Soft cover. English and Dutch text.; Paperback; 21 x 20.9 cm; 0.221 Kg; 80 pages with colour illustrations; Used book with signs of wear, namely on the front cover, spine and back cover. Edgeworn. Interior as new.; "The Princessehof collections incorporate two series of Chinese gouaches illustrating the manufacture of porcelains in China. Each series is painted in a distinctive style. There are fourty scenes in all which partly complement one another as far as their content is concerned. The larger series, with twenty-eight scenes, each one sized 28 cm by 30 cm, is the subject of this presentation. It probably dates late 18th century. Originally bought in Canton, it was presented during the 1930' to Nanne Ottema, founder of the Princessehof, by the Vereeniging van Vrienden der Aziatische Kunts, Amsterdam, as a gift. The objective of this publication is to provide factual information for a general public; to narrate in simple words Chinese traditions of porcelain manufacture as illustrated in twenty-eight scenes, and thereby to render and impression of the China of earlier days, when European merchants were desirous to learn more of ther varied industries, yet were prevented from travel beyond Canton. That the setting of the scenes is Jingdezhen, where European merchants obtained most of their porcelains for export to Canton, is indicated through the physical and social environment they illustrate. Methods of porcelain manufacture have changed since the gouaches were painted. Even so, many a technique, tool or manner illustrated here continues to be applied successfully, to this day." excerpt from the introduction..
