About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. EARLY PRINTING.. The fourth printing, January 1936. A near fine copy in a very good dust jacket which is missing a very shallow chip from head of spine, has a few edgetears and is somewhat darkened at spine. The jacket is similar in design to the first printing, but has different text on flaps and rear panel. Hellman's first book, and her first as well as most successful play. Despite being banned in Boston and London because of its Lesbian theme, it was a hit on Broadway and ran for 691 performances. Film versions were produced in 1934 and 1961. The printed dedication is to Dashiel Hammett.
