Acceptable. 646 p., clean and unmarked except for name of former owner on front end paper; paper age-toned but strong; very fine engravings by F.O.C. Darley; frontis. has tissue guard; green boards with carved bird and floral ornamentation, slightly rubbed and bumped; clear gilt writing; badly damaged spine. Rebinding with the same boards would make this a beautiful book. It is a 19th c. reprint of a late 18th c. best-seller mentioned in Jane Austen's Emma, and the type of romance satirized in Northanger Abbey. It's actually an entertaining if preposterous yarn, with an over-the-top villain who has cheated a brother and sister of their inheritance, lovers who are repeatedly separated, perpetual peril, characters with names like "Lord Mortimer" and "Lady Euphrasia." Who could resist?

Some foxing throughout the text. Binding has smudges front and back and wear at the top and bottom spine. Previous owners' names on the front free end paper and stamped on the bottom of the text block.
