About This Item
New York: Gracia Publishing Co, 1912. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Fair. Octavo. 5.75 x 8.5 in. xii, 490 pp. Fair in original decorative red cloth boards. The front cover is intact but the endpaper has separated, revealing the fabric binding. The pages, meanwhile, are toned but clean and the text is full of black-and-white photographs of Western North Carolina landscapes, mills, and women and children in the workplace. Pages 75-78 are loose but in-laid. This book, written by New York journalist, Thomas Dawley, largely focuses on Western North Carolina and the southern Appalachian mountains and the laborers that lived therein. The author was backed by Congressional allotment to explore the region and the conditions in which women and children worked.
