About This Item

Paris, GLM, (January) 1969.
1 vol. (150 x 215 mm) of 25 p., [2] and 1 f. Full anthracite-gray tinted natural calf, stamped with an original etching based on a lithograph by Joan Miro, smooth spine, gilt edges on witnesses by Jean-Luc Bongrain, covers and spines preserved, goatskin velvet endpapers, lined folder and slipcase, title in chinois style on the folder, by Claude Ribal (binding signed by Louise Bescond, 2022).

First edition.

One of the first 95 copies on Arches (no. 65) containing the original color lithograph by Joan Miro, signed.

Inscribed copy by Miro : "Pour Gisèle, hommage d'amitié, Miro, VI/69".

In May 1968, away from the events shaking France, René Char suffered a heart attack, the first in a long series of cardiovascular accidents. From this "experience" he wrote Chien du Coeur, which he published a year later: "I believed that death was coming, but a death where, fulfilled by an unexampled understanding, I would have one more step to take before I fell asleep, to be returned scattered to the universe forever." Composed during the summer at Les Busclats, the collection features six poems, most of which denounce the distortions of modern society and the widening gap between man and nature.

A precious copy by Gisèle Prassinos, with a large bold pencil drawing in color.

She is the younger sister of painter Mario Prassinos; from the age of fourteen, she produced automatic texts that her brother, through Henri Parisot, showed to the Surrealists. Man Ray photographed her reading her poems at Café Dynamo, while her first poems appeared in "Minotaure" in 1934; her first collection, La Sauterelle arthritique, was published the following year by Éditions GLM, with a note by Paul Éluard and a photograph by Man Ray.

She was the only woman chosen by André Breton for the first edition of the Anthologie de l'Humour noir, and remains a prominent figure in the history of Surrealism. Gisèle Prassinos went on to pursue a career as an illustrator, delivering Lewis Caroll's The Snark Hunt in 1946. From 1967 onwards, she began painting, and in the mid-70s, she began composing plastic installations.

Magnificent binding composed and crafted by Louise Bescond.

Provenance: Gisèle Prassinos ; 'Sous le signe de Maeght', (Paris, de Baecque, April 2015).

Le Chien de coeur

Paris, GLM, (janvier) 1969.
