About This Item

Chicago: Reilley & Lee, 1938. 249 pp, 9 3/8" H. Khaki cloth with black lettering/red banding on spine, red lettering/black illustration on front board. Profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings ranging from full page to vignette. The author/illustrator was born in Choteau, Montana and in his early years worked for Buffalo Bill Cody. His art was influenced by meeting Charles M. Russell around 1900 and he went on to become a collected artist of the American West. At the top of the half title page of this volume he has inscribed: "To H.R. Cannon (underscored) / Dont mind the ups and downs / of life - a good man is never / down - long. / Dan Muller" and has used the bottom half to sketch (first in pencil, then ink) a scene of a bucking bronco with his rider sitting on the ground with his hat beside him. This sketch is also signed "DAN MULLER" with a slanting dash above and below. A story of horses, cowboys, range wars, rodeos and romance. Pages 13 to 21 have a tiny dent in the middle of the page, pages 13 and 14 have a small light stain in the margin, minor toning to margins of pages, a few pages with a thumb mark in the margin, thin line of dried glue on front pastdown - some offset on free endpaper, small very light green/red soiling mark at bottom of page 84, spine has slight slant, small shallow bump at top of front hinge, a few scattered foxing marks on boards, two light liquid marks on bottom of text block, light soiling to board cloth, light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, browning to spine, minor bump at top corner of boards..
