Published shortly after he had won the World's Chess Championship. Reprinted 1922, 1923, 1926, 1931, 1937, 1941, 1942, 1945, 1946, 1948 and reset edition published in 1951. A knowledge of the elements is assumed. A graded course of instruction, with a general first chapter, the subjects of which are re-examined in more detail in succeeding chapters. Part two comprises 14 games played by Capablanca, with annotations, including notes on the openings.

José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera was a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. One of the greatest players of all time, he was renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. Due to his achievements in the chess world, mastery over the board and his relatively simple style of play he was nicknamed the "Human Chess Machine". He is widely regarded as the most naturally talented chess player in history.

Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament, draws were counted as a half point. In the second half, they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds, 8 replay rounds, and 4 game playoff for first at the end, there were 50 rounds all told (!). Like the 4th Congress, this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time (though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891), giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion. In 1872 John Watkinson started a chess column in the Huddersfield College Magazine. Eventually the single page column became a small magazine exclusively devoted to chess - The Huddersfield College Chess Magazine. Finally this magazine evolved into the British Chess Magazine which is still going strong today. The columns provide an interesting glimpse of the local Huddersfield & Yorkshire chess scene at the time before eventually becoming more nationally and internationally oriented in later years. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5394) First edition.The chess club in Hannover, Germany celebrated its fifty year anniversary by organizing a small, international chess master tournament in 1926. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. Harry Golombek OBE (March 1, 1911â€"January 7, 1995), was a British chess International Master and honorary grandmaster, chess arbiter, and chess author.

He was three times British chess champion, in 1947, 1949, and 1955. He was the chess correspondent of The Times newspaper from 1945 to 1989. He was an official of the Fédération Internationale des Échecs, and served as Arbiter for several important events, including the Candidates' Tournament of 1959 in Yugoslavia. He was also editor of some well-known collections of games such as Capablanca's and Réti's, and was a well respected author. He was editor of British Chess Magazine from 1938 to 1940, and its overseas editor throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Golombek also translated several chess books from Russian into English. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. 19 unpaginated tournament bulletins (approximately 55 pages) with tables. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2) bound in individual bulletin wrappers. First edition.The first Argentine Chess Championship was held in 1921. The Champion's title was granted after victorious or drawn match between previous champion and challenger, a winner of Torneo Mayor. The matches were done away in 1950 year, except for 1952. From 1953 the tournament was changed to an all-round invitation, although in many cases it was played with the Swiss system.
The 33rd championship was played in 1955 with Miguel Najdorf the victor in a twenty player contested event. Cyril Kipping was an International Judge. He composed more than 7,000 problems, most of which were three movers (he sometimes used the pseudonyms C. Stanley, S. Henry and S. Mere). He collaborated with the most important magazines of the 20th century: Chess Amateur, Chess, The Problemist (whose editor he was during 32 years) and also wrote many books: 300 Chess Problems (1916), Selected Gems (1922) and The Chessmen Speak in the White Christmas series (1932), which included 147 three movers and can be read and downloaded from here.Condition:Corners bumped and lightly rubbed.
