All volumes tight and unmarked with minimal shelf wear. Faint crease to Volume I spine panel. Faint stain to Volume II spine panel. Limitation pages translated from Danish in part: Contains 180 drawings made as a direct copy of the plates and printed at Brondum's graphic workshop in Copenhagen. Each volume 7 1/2" x 6 3/4". --- Cloth-bound. Very sensitive hinges. Wear to the corners of the covers and the spine (see photo). Spine is cracked but repaired. Occasional light foxing. Notes written on endpapers and there is a small piece of newspaper inside front cover.

Text slightly tanned typical of age, clean and unmarked. Former owner attribution on front free endpapers. Front free endpaper has dark discoloration triangle caused by a piece of newsprint left in book. Illustrated throughout with b/w etchings and drawings. This title is very rare. Unable to locate existence of any other copies for comparison.

1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Circa 1875 edition of popular captivity narrative. Nelson & Phillips, New York. Spencer was 11 when captured in 1792. Brown blindstamped cloth, gilt title on spine. Condition is Very Good: Recased using original boards sometime in last 40 years. Modern endpapers. No interior writing, occasional foxing, some smudges, old corner folds. Small hole pp.13/14 affecting a few letters. Binding is sound. 160 pages with 4 plates and 4 engravings embedded in text all included in pagination. Contents bound at end as usual with this book. The plates and engravings are same topics and locations as the 1842 edition but are by a different engraver. True first edition is 1835 in either New York or Pennsylvania. Fourteen volumes in original hardcovers. Series 1: volumes 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26. 1896-1914. Generally condition runs from Good to Very Good plus. These are heavy volumes that are prone to binding failures when handled improperly. Some of these volumes are sound, some strengthened with new endpapers, some where binding is starting. None have failed bindings. The earlier volumes show more general wear to the boards than later volumes. I have prepared a more complete condition report on each volume so feel free to inquire.
