London: J.M. Dent & Co, 1909. Very Good. London, J.M. Dent & Co., 1909/ 1908. Small octavo; mild signs of use and age; a very good copy. The half-title is inscribed in ink 'From C.W. Mackellar 1911', and carries the inkstamp of the 'Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911. Mackellar's Library'. Campbell Mackellar was a financial supporter of the expedition, and donated a large quantity of books to form the library. Mawson wrote in 'The Home of the Blizzard' that the 'Mackellar Library was a boon to all, and the literature of polar exploration was keenly followed and discussed'. Evidently Chaucer was not as popular, but this may account for the survival of this rare artefact from the expedition. Provenance: Sir Douglas Mawson; by descent.
