About This Item

London: Goupil & Co.,, 1898. First edition, very handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf. This work, published posthumously, is a beautifully illustrated biography of Charles I, following the story of his life from birth to death, with numerous finely printed portraits and facsimile documents from the royal collections. Sir John Skelton (1831-1897) was a lawyer by training, and his biographies of Mary Queen of Scots and of Charles I "characteristically displayed something of the spirit of the advocate" (ODNB). Skelton was a firm royalist, strongly on the side of Charles in the narrative. Provenance: with the bookplate to the front free endpaper verso of the British historian Thomas Hodgkin (1831-1913), an authority on the early Middle Ages and best known for his eight volume Italy and Her Invaders (1880-99). Large quarto (319 x 247 mm). Contemporary green morocco by Zaehnsdorf, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, wide gilt border to covers enclosing gilt arms of Charles I as centrepiece, richly gilt turn ins, watered silk doublures and free endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Colour portrait frontispiece, 41 engraved plates with captioned tissue guards (a number of them smaller), title page printed in red and black. Spine sunned, else a fine copy.
