About This Item

London: Goupil & Co.,, 1898. First edition, attractively bound by Maclehose. This work, published posthumously, is a beautifully illustrated biography of Charles I which follows the story of his life from birth to death with numerous finely printed portraits and facsimile documents. A lawyer by training, Sir John Skelton (1831-1897) gained fame as a writer thanks a series of successful biographical works on Mary Queen of Scots, in which he "characteristically displayed something of the spirit of the advocate" (ODNB). He also contributed to Fraser's Magazine under the pseudonym of Shirley - a name inspired by Charlotte Bronte's novel - and to Blackwood's Magazine. The MacLehose bindery was founded in 1862 by Glasgow publisher and bookseller James MacLehose (1811-1885). The bindery soon became known for its elaborately tooled works in an art nouveau style. Large quarto (320 x 249 mm). Contemporary red morocco by Maclehose, spine with raised bands, elaborate frames and lettering in gilt on compartments, gilt ornamental design on covers, board edges and turn-ins ruled in gilt, cream paper doublures, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Colour portrait frontispiece, 41 engraved plates with captioned tissue guards (a number of them smaller), title page printed in red and black. Spine toned, occasional rubbing to extremities, one lower corner gently bumped, a few small marks to covers, offsetting to endpapers and title page, contents bright and clean. A very good, generously-margined copy.
