About This Item
New York and San Francisco, 1887-9. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo, hardcover. No dj, green cloth. Vg condition. Three publications, bound together. 134, 256, and 70 pp. Ex-library copy, remains of card pocket, light interior stamping to endpapers: ("Library S. P. Building": the Southern Pacific Building, San Francisco). No marking to contents. Binding slightly shaken, though fully intact and secure. Contents relate to the United States Pacific Railway Commission 1887 investigation into the financial practices of railroads, specifically here, the Cental Pacific, that received federal funding for their construction. Part II constitutes a lengthy rigorous defense that also provides a detailed history of the Railroad's history. In 1885 The Central Pacific Railroad was leased to the Southern Pacific, effectively becoming its subsidiary, which possibly explains this copy's previous history.
