About This Item
Springfield OH: Springfield Publishing Co.. Good. [1901]. First Edition. Hardcover. (maroon cloth; no dust jacket, as issued) [moderately worn volume, a bit of fraying at bottom front corner, several whiteish scrape marks on front cover, light bumping at all corners, tiny tear in cloth at top of spine, front hinge a little weak but binding solid, internally quite clean]. (B&W halftone photographs), engravings) A full accounting of the various events held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Springfield's establishment, which as the title indicates spread out over a full week, with each day having its theme (and hence its own dedicated section of the book). Following an introductory chapter on the founding of Springfield and a rundown of the Centennial program, these sections are: Religious Day; Formal Opening Day; Pioneer Day; Military Day; Fraternal Day; Agricultural and Labor Day; and Woman's Day and Educational Interests. The capper is a short chapter detailing the preparation of "The Log Cabin," a local attraction that was prepared for visitors by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The volume includes the texts of various speeches and addresses given as part of the festivities. Some of the most interesting material appears in the Woman's Day section, which includes the following reports: "The Work of the Women of Springfield in the Civil War"; "Woman's Work for Love"; "History of the Women's Clubs of Springfield"; and "Temperance in Springfield." .
