About This Item

Oxford UK: Osprey Pub Lishing, 2001. Seventh Printing . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 7 1/4" x 10. Reynolds, Wayne. 64 Pages Indexed. In the 1st century BC, Strabo wrote of the Celts that the whole race is madly fond of war, high-spirited and quick to battle and on whatever pretext you stir them up, you will have them ready to face danger, even if they have nothing on their side but their own strength and courage. This book gives an insight into the life of the Celtic warrior, and his experience of battle on foot, on horseback, and as a charioteer. It also details Celtic society and studies the vital ritual nature of Celtic warfare, from the naked gaesatae to the woad-painted warriors. To his Greek and Roman adversaries the Celtic warrior was the archetypoal barbarian. Huge in stature, immensely strong and bloodthirsty beyond description. Charging naked into battle, impervious to wounds and wielding a terrible sword with whch to take the heads of his enemies, he was the antithesis of the drilled and disciplined soldiers of the hoplite ophalanx and Roman cohort. This book is about the life of such a Celtic warrior, his place in Celtic society and how he he lived, fought and died. Illustrated with full colour artwork, maps, and pohotographs. Many illustrations are in color.
